Dropbox - Pick up files from any computer

If you have ever shuffled files between computers via a memory stick, portable hard-drive or just emailing files to yourself so they are available wherever you are - Dropbox could be very useful.

Dropbox

Dropbox is an easy to use file storage and sync service that allows you to have your files available on other computers, or even just any computer with an internet connection. Best of all, it has free 2GB accounts.

I currently use Dropbox as a point for daily backups across my different machines and for sharing the occasional file between my desktop computer and laptop without the hassle of switching on the laptop, finding a memory stick with enough space... and so on.

The main reason I find Dropbox so powerful is the simple to use interface, just drag and drop files onto the dropbox folder... and that's it. It uploads quietly in the background and is soon available online and on any other computers linked to your account.

Another key feature is the revisions element which lists previous versions of your files. Overwritten a file with a blank version? Simply reinstate your last good version. Another helpful feature is the balloon pop-up that appears on every machine when a file is deleted or added to your dropbox.

Public sharing is also possible on Dropbox. After dropping files that you want to share into the 'public' folder, you are given a normal website address for that particular file which can be copied into instant messenger conversations, emails or forum posts.

"For anyone who has tried to send a file over MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger, this will save a lot of time... and fury."

The service also offers a photo folder where pictures can be uploaded and shared through the public gallery link. The photo feature may not be as remarkable as uploading onto a social networking site for friends with features such tagging or commenting, but for ease of use and speed, Dropbox does have the edge.
